The Press & Information Office of UNMIBH, headed by Alexander Ivanko,
currently comprises ten International Staff and seven local staff . The
majority of them are based at UNMIBH HQ in Sarajevo, with the remainder
at regional press offices in Banja Luka, Mostar & Tuzla.
The Press & Information Office of UNMIBH HQ is made up of three components:
1.THE SPOKESMAN'S OFFICE deals with the media, both local & International,
on a daily basis. One of the spokespeople formally briefs the press six
days a week at the 1100 hours press briefing at NATO's press centre at
the Holiday Inn. Occasionally briefings are given in other major cities
and towns. Information is also passed to the media in interviews - for
TV, radio and print or during informal "off the record" briefings.
The Spokesman's Office briefs mainly on the activities of the United Nations
International Police Taskforce (UNIPTF), and so has to rely to a great
extent on feedback from the UNIPTF, i.e. through sitreps or "in-house"
briefings. The Spokesman's Office also covers the work of UN Civil Affairs,
The UN Mine Action Centre (MAC), and the activities of the International
Criminal Tribunal (ICTY) in the Hague and other UN organisations.
In addition, the Spokesman's Office provides a wealth of up-to-date and
relevant information: Reuters on-line wire news service, BBC monitoring
service, FBIS monitoring service, press briefing summaries and transcripts
of the UN's daily & weekly radio shows (see below), or on the "UNMIBH
PIO DAILY NEWS" bulletin board, accessed on the UN CCMAIL network.
2. UN RADIO has, at the time of writing produced 30 weekly programs. Material
included has covered topics such as: Information packages on behalf of
the UN MAC,
special features on the UN ICTY, UNHCR's shelter program, the
UNIPTF stations, other International Organisations such as UMCOR and general
information and advice. The target audience is predominantly the local
population but the programs also provide information for UN staff and other
agencies in Bosnia Herzegovina. All these products are available on tape
from our office at the UNMIBH HQ in Sarajevo.
UN Radio's programs are broadcast nationwide on a daily basis through Radio
BH and in the Sarajevo region on five Independent local stations. Furthermore,
UN Radio has been tasked with increasing its capacity to disseminate information
throughout Bosnia Herzegovina and is in the process of establishing a 24hr
radio station in Sarajevo"EFM". Our partners in this project
are the O.S.C.E.
(Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe),
the Students Union of Bosnia & the University of Sarajevo. In addition,
another aspect of this incresed UN Radio activity is the design of a WWW
UNPIO-UNMIBH web page (which you are looking at!!) and the establishment
of a UNPIO mailing list that is distributed to subscribers world-wide.
The UN Radio Daily & Weekly programs, summaries of press briefings
and other mission related news is distributed via e-mail on a daily basis.
3.THE PRINT UNIT has developed the UNMIBH Information Bulletin. This publication
is produced monthly in English, Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian. The Information
Bulletin reports on the activities of the mission and also covers the work
of other UN agencies in the area. The purpose is to have an informative
publication describing who we are, what we do, and in what areas we carry
out our work. The target audience for the English version is the International
Media and the various International Organisations present in the country.
The local language versions are distributed through the Press & Information
Officers and through UNIPTF channels nationwide, foremost to national,
regional and local Government officials, police, media, educational institutions
and wherever appropriate. Circulation figures are 500 English, 1000 Croatian
and 2000 each in Bosnian & Serbian.
